Point A to Point B
167. I like remembering the way supermarkets looked a long time ago. (I guess this can apply to any building that gets remodeled, but I'm having vivid memories of PathMark on Route 15 in north NJ circa 1992.)
166. I like the Hudson River Greenway.
165. I like kayaks. (But I still might like canoes more.)
164. I like using train tickets as bookmarks.

The 40th Annual Mini10k! Central Park, 8:00am, June 11, 2011
Ten reasons why I had an awesome race this morning:
1. The world's first all-female 10k in NYC in 1972 had 78 runners. Today I was one of 6,000 women. It's always amazing and I always get a little teary at the start.
2. It was not 100 degrees!!! Though I was wishing it would rain a little because I was still pretty hot.
3. Until mile 2 I would say my leg was slightly uncomfortable, but then I didn't feel it and it didn't ever hurt.
4. KT Tape, I'm sticking with you. Literally.
5. The guy on the side of the road playing "Chariots of Fire" theme on the trumpet was awesome.
6. I have no idea why I take the uphills so well, but I sure am happy I do.
7. I will never underestimate the power of a calf massage.
8. It was what my mind and body needed to convince myself I'll be able to run the marathon in 5 months.
9. I don't know my exact splits, but they got shorter every mile. My first mile was 10:26 but my average page was 9:43.
10. I knew I wasn't going to have a PR, but this actually ended up being my second fastest 10k ever!

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Sev-en!
162. I like that rough mornings can be fixed by listening to The Decemberists' "June Hymn" while looking at a slide show of mountain and nature photographs.
161. So, when I run I habitually sing the counts of the music to the tune of the song I'm listening to. And I really like when the number matches up with the beat. Especially when it's "sev-en."
160. I am a sucker for a sense of community
159. I like trying new things! Like rock wall climbing. It was not pretty, but you've gotta start somewhere right?
158. I like volunteering.
157. I really like volunteering with kids.
156. Maybe this one is a cop-out, but I like liking things. It's much better than disliking things.

I am a procrastination station.
155. I like the kind of envelopes with good tasting glue. Why do some envelopes taste so bad when you lick them, while others are so palatable? Someone needs to have a monopoly on envelope glue. The good kind.
154. I like that I'm able to have entire hypothetical conversations in my head in French. (However, the second I'm in a situation where I can speak it aloud to someone I forget everything!)
153. I like cello music. It's my favorite-sounding string instrument. If music ran through my veins instead of blood, it would be cello.
152. I like the following dialogue in The Graduate: "This whole idea sounds pretty half-baked." "Oh, it's not. It's completely baked."
151. I like the smell in the air when I run past The Sports Club/LA on 61st street. It's a combination of pool chlorine and IcyHot.
150. I like the Penguin Cafe Orchestra station on Pandora.

High-Five
148. I like documentaries about mountaineering. I also like when people injured on during mountain climbs survive grueling ordeals. I think about them and their broken legs and frostbitten faces when I feel like complaining that some body part or another hurts during my long runs. Then the shin splints don't seem so bad.
147. I like to read the Approval Matrix in a counter-clockwise direction, starting with Highbrow/Despicable.
146. I like taking my vitamins for the neon pee.
145. I am a huge fan of oatmeal.
144. I like waking up rested an hour before my alarm goes off. Taking my time significantly improves the quality of my mornings.

135. I am addicted to running clothes!
134. I like work days that move really quickly.
133. I like all of my doctors. I really lucked out getting some pretty awesome medical professionals working on my machine.

Auld, Auld, Auld Lang Syne
I didn't make any New Years resolutions this year. I never do. But if I did, these might be ten of them:
1. Fit Ken Burns' entire oeuvre into my head.
2. Live every moment like a "Sputnik moment."
3. Start saying "yes" instead of "yeah," and "would you like" instead of "do you want."
4. Work on my upper body strength.
5. Discover cold fusion.
6. Dust off my French-speaking skills.
7. Find the perfect pair of running underwear. Or, as I like to call them, runderwear.
8. Get Morgan Freeman to follow me around and narrate my life.
9. Visit another continent. Or at least a different part of my own continent.
10. Figure out why it is so hard to clean scrambled egg off a spatula.

128. I like campfires!
127. I like the smell of the hair conditioner at New York Sports Club.
126. I like solving for X, especially math problems during and about exercise. It helps distract me and pass the time on a run or swim.

67. I like palindromes!

65. I like already knowing GRE vocabulary words.
64. I love photographs. I love that I have tons of old ones from my grandparents, and that I took a lot in high school and college and beyond. I wish I had more of them, though. Of everything. Ten things I learned one weekend.
1. Picking out baby supplies is a part-time job.
2. People need to eat less and move more
3. Two soft pretzels is not dinner.
4. Fancy sofa beds are extremely comfortable.
5. You can have a late lunch, a subway detour, run with two bags up seven staircases and through multi-lane traffic, and still catch a bus to NYC.
6. I am a highly unmotivated marathoner.
7. The best time to go to Whole Foods is before 9am.
8. The best things to fill your cart with are fruit, vegetables, and Burt's Bees.
9. "Your Love" by The Outfield is the best song to listen to while cleaning the bathroom.

Retroactive listing: Part III
60. College football, now that I kind of understand it. (But really I just like knowing what all the letters on the referee shirts mean.)
59. I like the snapping of new shampoo bottle lids.
58. I love the city still.
57. I love index cards and I like making lists on them. Especially big ones, and in pencil.
56. "Arrested Development." Best show ever.
55. I like my handwriting, depending on the writing implement I'm using and the thickness of the paper. Fronts of new pages are better than backs. But I always like how I write the letter "s" in script at the end of words.
54. I like when I've walked around neighborhoods enough to piece them together, figuring out where one stops and the other starts. And I like landmarks. I like this best in a foreign city like Paris or Florence. It makes me feel residential.
53. I like bare trees covered in white lights.
52. I like the smell of pine when it comes from trees in the city all lined up on the sidewalk to be bought for Christmas.
51. I like bars whose façades are made of wood and painted red or green.
50. Even though it puts me to sleep, one of my favorite noises is slowly moving water. When I'm lifeguarding and someone is swimming slowly and gently, the rippling and tricking water sound is my favorite.
49. I like getting my hair cut. If it grew faster I would do it much more often.
48. Wintertime and ice skating and Christmassy things, even when it feel less like Christmastime.
47. I like when being kissed just the right way makes me want to cry.
46. I really like my wrist bones. In fact, they may very well be my favorite bones.
45. (November 25, 2005) Today in choir the bass and tenor sections sang this one part of the last chorus and it sounded so beautiful that I felt like getting emotional.
44. I like when classes I don't particularly fancy end early.
43. I like the L Magazine.
42. I like riding in the passenger seat of cars and watching the side view mirrors. Stationary car, receding scenery. Watching the past while you move forward. It reminds me of road trips, movie scenes and sunsets.
41. I like drinking out of water bottles continuously until it starts to crumple in my hand and my thumb and fingers touch.

37. I like the number thirty-seven. It's my favorite.
36. (2005) I sort of like running. Sort of.
35. This is sort of strange, but there is a ponytail holder I put on a Dasani water bottle a million years ago, and it wasn't even mine to begin with, but I've never taken it off and I like when I pick this particular water bottle out of the refrigerator without looking. I don't know why I even like that.
34. I like that I have green eyes.
33. I sometimes enjoy being mildly to moderately narcissistic.
32. When I see pictures of myself that I like, it makes me happy to think that I will probably have very (at least half) cute children.
31. I like my brother, Frank.
30. I like that weather has distinct odors.
29. This particular click noise that my phone makes right before it rings so I know I'm going to get a call half a second before I do--I like that.
28. I really love living in the greatest city in the world, where people sit on small café chairs on library steps, make beautiful music on subway platforms, kiss hello and wave goodbye and play musical taxis and maneuver around one another in the most extraordinary ways.
27. Once I get started, I really like doing research. Books, articles, archives. It's so much fun, especially at the NYPL art room.
26. I like getting good grades on art papers about concepts I don't think I really understand, but maybe I do after all.
25. I like Christmas gum.
24. I liked that afternoon we spent in the bleachers at the Curtis lacrosse game.
23. I like boys who play instruments and boys who play well with kids.
22. I like peeling clementines in one whole piece. Oranges too, because they're harder.
21. I like when you haven't seen a friend in a really long time, but the second you talk or see each other again it's as if not a day has passed and everything just falls back into place.
38. I like when it's sunny out and the lights are off in my dorm room and my curtain is closed because it makes a really nice orange glow. (It is perfect for naps.)

Retroactive listing: Part I
20. I also like the smell of sunscreen year-round.
19. I sometimes like the kind of sleepy that swimming and chlorine makes me.
18. I like St. Marks Pl.
17. While I may not enjoy ArtH368, I really do enjoy the art of the collage. And I love every object I've bespattered with the random clippings of my life.
16. I like parents that don't use television as a babysitter and whose kids are funny and happy and creative because of it.
15. I like holding hands.
14. I secretly like my curly hair.
13. I used to like reading on the diving board of The Fountains on hot, empty afternoons before they took it down.
12. I love when two items that you use together get finished up at the same time. Like peanut butter and jelly, or laundry detergent and dryer sheets, or shampoo and conditioner, so that there isn't an excess of one over the other.
11. I like sleeping through class, and then later on finding out it was canceled anyway.
10. I like a good cry every now and then.
9. I like to sometimes bite into the ice cream part of ice cream cones, and not lick them. I think it's the teeth marks.
8. (November 9, 2005) Today I liked sitting on the shuttle bus on the way back to the dorms, listening to songs that usually make me feel like crying, staring out the window onto a cloudy city that was so busy with its own comings and goings. I liked that it was so windy that the trees were blowing around in a delicately violent way, making their leaves dance right off their branches and flutter in slow motion like snow, following erratic paths to the ground.
7. I like the phenomenon of creating verbs out of nouns. That my entire generation has become "friended."
6. I like old men who wear berets and chat up old women on the subway.
5. I like when I'm walking through a museum with my headphones on, and songs play that match entirely with the works or mood of the particular room I'm in- like a Baroque classical piece coming on when I walk into an 18th century French paneled room. Perfect.
4. I like to cut things like fun tac, silly putty or play-doh with scissors.
3. I like sort-of-stale marshmallows where the insides are still squishy, but the outsides have gotten kind of hard.
2. (2005) On really clear days, especially summer ones in the woods or at The Fountains apartment building where I lifeguard, I like to find a patch of nature that includes really blue sky, really green trees, and really white clouds all together.
1. Waking up to early morning sun and occasional car horns honking.
19. I sometimes like the kind of sleepy that swimming and chlorine makes me.

List? Let's
I keep a book of things that I like.
The problem is that I spend less and less time in front of this book with a pen in my hand, and more time in front of a computer/smart phone. I also lack the attention span and short-term memory to go back and fill this book in, so the list has been severely neglected in recent years. My goal is for this blog to help me get back on track liking the things that I like, and telling you about them.
Maybe you even like these things too.
